Cavs get ugly win against the Highlanders

Virginia held Radford to 38 percent shooting but managed to shoot only 27 percent themselves Tuesday night as they took down the Highlanders 54-44 at John Paul Jones Arena.

Radford (2-6, 0-2) held a lead early in the first half until the Hoos went on a 24-5 run behind 13 K.T. Harrell points. Both teams went cold in the second half but Virginia's stifling defense and good shooting from the charity stripe propelled them to the ten-point victory. At one point Virginia (6-3, 1-0) held Radford scoreless for nearly 15 minutes and finished the game 20-for-24 from the free throw line.

Mike Scott shot only 1-of-7 from the field but made all eight of his free throws to score 10 points and grab 13 rebounds en route to his fifth straight double-double. It is the first time a Virginia player has recorded five straight double-doubles since Ralph Sampson did so for the Cavaliers.

Mustapha Farrakhan and Joe Harris each added 14 points for Virginia.

Gorkem Sonmez led Radford in scoring with 15 points and was the only Highlander to score in double figures. Radford committed 19 turnovers on the night.

Virginia will now take a 10 day hiatus for exams before returning to action at home against Oregon on December 17th.
