UVA lands 4-star recruit

Virginia got it's 24th verbal commitment Tuesday night as four-star offensive lineman Jay Whitmire announced he would be playing for UVA in 2011.

The T.C. Williams (Alexandria) standout had offers from several elite programs such as Penn State, Pitt and Notre Dame.

Whitmire, who stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 285 pounds, is rated as a four-star by Scout.com, listing him as the 25th-best offensive tackle prospect in the nation.

He is rated as the 14th-best recruit in the state of Virginia by Rivals.com. Whitmire played the majority of his high school career at the offensive tackle position, but the young depth at that position for UVA could move him to guard early in his career.
